The
Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is calling Canada-based artists to submit
proposals for a temporary mural in Fort McMurray.
The mural,
which will cover the 800 square foot exterior wall of the Beacon Hill Pump
House, is part of the municipality’s Graffiti Abatement Mural Project.
“The response to previous installations has
been fantastic, and we’re excited to see the proposals for this year’s
project,” said Leigh Agozzino-Organ, Community Strategies Supervisor.
“We are looking for artists to share images of Wood Buffalo that
represent our unique culture and community.”
Launched in
2012, the Graffiti Abatement Mural Project is a program that provides legal
spaces for street art and is a proactive approach to preventing graffiti
vandalism while adding public art to the community. Previous
installations include a mural painted behind Composite High School in 2012, and
another mural behind Father Turcotte Elementary School in 2013.
The
successful artist will also give a community workshop and lecture that will
address the difference between sanctioned graffiti and vandalism.
The
deadline for submissions is Monday March 31, 2014, at 4:30 p.m.
