winterREELS Film Challenge 2013 – Final Results

winterPLAY 2013 wraps-up after 10-days of pure fun and entertainment in Wood Buffalo. Both Toddske and Tito hosted several events for this year’s festival including the sold-out Winter Side Splitter Comedy Night, Hockey Goons & Puck Bunnies as well as the winterREELS Film Challenge.

Six teams entered the film challenge but only four managed to survive the harsh filmmaking conditions and completed their projects. Each team had six days to write, direct and edit a short film that had to include a Snowman, the phrase “I’m Going Swimming” and a hockey rink.

The four finished films were judged by our special panel that included Theresa Wells (local Blogger and Community Advocate), Russell Thomas (RMWB Councilor), Mike Allen (local MLA) and Jeremy Irla (Events Wood Buffalo Manager). Films were judged based on their use and interpretation of the special elements given as well as originality of the story.

Team Classic Janvier was declared the winner with his short-film titled “Think…Again” and will receive $500 and a trophy from Events Wood Buffalo. Team Kiwinadian was the Runner-Up with their short-film titled “Snuffie the Snowman Slayer” and will receive $150 from Events Wood Buffalo.

Emblems of Alberta

According to the Alberta Culture Ministry, "The emblems of Alberta reflect the province's history, its natural and diverse landscapes, and its people."

While most Albertans can easily identify the flag with the shield of arms on a blue background, there are many other emblems that reflect the history and experiences of this province.

You can learn all about the Alberta provincial emblems by visiting http://culture.alberta.ca/about/emblems/default.aspx

For example, did you know how the Province received its name? "When the Provincial District of Alberta was created in 1882, the Marquis of Lorne was Governor General of Canada. He named the district in honour of his wife, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert. Alberta became a province in 1905."

Also, you can learn about the Lodgepole Pine, Alberta's official tree.

Learn all about these emblems and other cultural knowledge, resources and provincial treasures by visiting the Alberta Culture Ministry at: http://culture.alberta.ca/

Events Wood Buffalo presents Irish Descendants

From their "kitchen party" to ours! These multiple award-winning kings of Celtic music have been bringing toe-tapping reels and soulful ballads to audiences since 1990.

The Irish Descendants have been a mainstay in the Newfoundland and Canadian music industry for over two decades. In that time the band has performed over 4000 shows across North America and beyond! With the founding members all hailing from various outport fishing communities, the original goal for the group was to take the music that they all learned and performed home in their kitchens, to the festival stages, pubs, and concert halls of their beloved Newfoundland.

Now they're coming to Fort McMurray for one night only. Don't miss the kitchen party of the year!

On February 20, the Northern Lights Health Foundation and our radio station partners will take to the airways for the Have a Heart Radiothon presented by Fisher Powerline Construction Ltd. Patients and their families who received exceptional care at the health centre will share their remarkable stories with listeners to help us raise awareness and funds for critical state of the art medical equipment.

Please email foundation@nlhf.ca or call 780.791.6041 to arrange your interview or to learn more about this exciting community event.

Here are a few questions to help you prepare your thoughts:

1. What did your caregiver do to help make your experience better?
2. Why are you grateful for their care?
3. What difference did it make that you were able to get the care you needed right here at home?
*Very important to stress local care.

NorthWord and Events Wood Buffalo presents Shane Koyczan

NorthWord Magazine, launching issue #8 Fire, and Events Wood Buffalo presents Shane Koyczan, a virtuoso of the spoken word and one of the stars of the 2012 Vancouver Olympics Opening Ceremony. He will change your mind about poetry forever.

With his rhythmic verse in high gear, he navigates his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and a tender humanity that has brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, and Los Angeles. Winner of the US Slam Poetry Championship and the Canadian Spoken Word Olympics, Koyczan is truley and extraordinary talent that has blown the dust off of the designation "poet".

"Shane Koyczan is electrifying. It's a rare poet who can make his audience laugh and cry; this is a writer who will break your heart then heal it." - Val McDermid, author of the Grave Tattoo.
