World Language Collection Expands at Your Public Library

Fort McMurray Public Library is pleased to announce the arrival and availability of new World Language titles made possible with a $10,000 donation from Suncor Energy Foundation.

Fort McMurray, March 8, 2012: Mark Little, Suncor Energy’s executive vice-president, Oil Sands and In Situ, announced a $10,000 donation to the Fort McMurray Public Library on behalf of the Suncor Energy Foundation at the annual Suncor Executive Vice President’s Community Reception in June 2011. These funds were designated for the purchase of cultural materials, which will allow the growth of the library’s permanent World Language collection.

“It is essential for the library collection to reflect our community’s richness in diversity of languages and cultures. For children studying and speaking English and French at school, it is important to provide materials in the other languages they speak and read with their families,” says Children’s Services Manager, Jennifer Mason.

Fort McMurray Public Library has split the $10,000 donation to allow expansion in both the adult and junior collections. This means an injection of $5,000 toward materials for adults and teens, and $5,000 toward materials for children. Fiction and non-fiction materials have been ordered in the following languages: Adult Arabic; Junior Arabic; Somali; Spanish; Tagalog; and Urdu. Future orders include: Thai; Hindi; Gujarati; Filipino and Chinese.

Some examples of titles that can be found in the new World Language Collection are:
     Spanish – Angels and Demons
Somali – A collection of Somali Proverbs
Junior Arabic – Manal wahied (Feelings of loneliness)

Some titles may have English translation for cataloguing purposes, but all titles will be searchable in their original language in the library catalogue and can be signed out for the regular 3 week loan period.

World Language Materials purchased with the donation from the Suncor Energy Foundation are available on library shelves today. Staff at the Adult and Children’s Help desks look forward to speaking with new and returning library patrons who may find this collection of interest.

Children’s Services Manager Jennifer Mason shelves the first shipment of World Language materials made possible by the $10,000 Suncor Energy Foundation donation.
