Wood Buffalo Community Building Project

The University of Waterloo is working with various agencies and groups within the Regional Municipality to build social and non-profit capacity in our region. In a project that is designed to strengthen community empowerment and engagement, the ultimate goal is to enhance our community's capacity to make Wood Buffalo a vibrant place for people to live, work and raise a family.

This unique nation-building enterprise brings together community leaders from both our region and and Waterloo to help each other develop transformational and lasting solutions. While the primary focus is community capacity building through the non-profit sector, the project is designed to respond to emerging needs and opportunities that are identified by the community.

The project is moving forward by offering workshops for local groups. Under the direction of the The Wood Buffalo Community Building Project Steering Committee (made up of local leaders from the nonprofit, government and business sector as well as leaders from Waterloo Region), a series of workshops have been designed to help nonprofits build their capacity.

According to their website, "Capacity building is any activity - such as strategic planning, board development, operational improvements and technology upgrades - that strengthens the ability of a nonprofit to achieve greater performance and impact." No matter where your organization might be, capacity building is a great investment that can improve organizational development and program success dramatically.
