Youth Development speaker is visiting Fort McMurray

The Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to inform you of a guest speaker who will be attending Fort McMurray. Mr Abdifatah (Abdi) Warsame will be working with the local African Community in hopes to establish a mentoring youth program for our equity seeking and racialized youth in the Wood Buffalo region.

Mr Warsame’s visit to Fort McMurray is still being organized and a tentative date for the week of June 13th to June 17th has been set. Mr Warsame will be bringing with him a couple of guest speakers who he has closely worked with in the past, one of whom is Said Dirie. Together they will be presenting to a number of community members and groups. Topics will range from Dealing with Difficult Youth for parents to the Anti Oppression Framework in Dealing with Diverse Communities for the RCMP.

Mr Warsame brings with him an impressive background in youth program development and implementation and his knowledge will certainly be worth sharing with all interested community members and organizers. Mr Warsame is also the Co-Founder for Centre of Youth Development and Mentoring Services (CYDMS) currently operating in Toronto, Ontario.

CYDMS currently runs two programs:
1. Youth Education Services (YES) program
The objective of this program is to make sure Youth will graduate elementary and secondary school in a good standing, learn and develop the proper character attributes to enter High School or Post Secondary.

2. Mentoring and Violence Prevention (MVP) program
The objective of this program is to keep kids in school and out of the juvenile justice system.

Additional information on CYDMS, Mr Warsame and Mr Dirie can be found attached or by visiting the CYDMS website at http://www.cydms.org/ This program initiative has been brought before a number of community members with positive feedback and many others wishing to contribute directly to its implementation.

If you would like to have further information on the above initiative or feel this is a program you would like to contribute to please contact Cst Dustin Greig below and he will forward your information to the appropriate contact(s).

Regards,
