Celebrate Alberta Arts Days With Free RMWB Programs


Are you interested in the Arts? Longing to find a creative outlet?

Join the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in celebrating Alberta Arts Days at the Haxton Centre in Borealis Park.

Friday, September 17th, 2010
Educational Workshops featuring local artists. There will be displays, educational resources and discussion opportunities about watercolor and weaving.

Saturday, September 18th, 2010
Watercolor Workshops
Participants will learn how to do watercolor paintings with different types of paintbrushes in order to create a variety of intricate designs.

Kids Session – 9:30-11:30
Youth Session – 1:30-3:30
Adult Session – 5:30-7:30

Sunday, September 19th, 2010
Weaving/Dying Workshop
FREE (Snacks provided)
Kids Session – 9:30-11:30 - Weaving Cotton - Each participant will weave their own cotton "treasure bag", using a cardboard loom. As participants are weaving, a demonstration of spinning cotton will be held. Finishing with a cord and beads will complete the session.
Youth Session – 1:30-3:30 - Finger Weaving with Cotton - Participants will weave colorful beaded bracelets or necklaces. Color play in weaving and finger braiding will be introduced, along with a demonstration of spinning and weaving with cotton.
Adult/Seniors Session – 5:30-7:30 - Get the Textile Bug - Participants will learn about the various stages and processes involved in the production of silk while preparing silk scarves for dying in natural cohineal, an insect dye. Basic shibori (a Japanese tie-dye technique) and natural dying will be taught, along with a demonstration of silk spinning.
